Description

Professor Paul Oslington, Professor of Economics and Dean of Business at Alphacrucis College, Sydney gives this talk entitled 'Markets, social services and religion: What is the future of service delivery through church organisations' at ANU Crawford School of Public Policy. This video was recorded on 7 March 2013.Church-related not-for-profit organisations deliver approximately half of social services in Australia through contracting arrangements with governments. Significant economic and religious issues have arisen, especially incentives for erosion of quality, transfer of risk, staffing shortages, gender imbalances, lack of innovation, and erosion of the sustaining identity and mission ofthe organisations. This project is innovative in bringing together a team of economists, sociologists and religion scholars to work on the issues, utilising rich new qualitative and quantitative survey data. Outcomes will improve service delivery arrangements and provide policy roadmaps for the social service organisations, churches and government.Paul Oslington is Professor of Economics and Dean of Business at Alphacrucis College in Sydney. In 2008 he was appointed to a new created chair jointly in the School of Business and School of Theology at Australian Catholic University, where he continues as an Adjunct Professor. He was previously Associate Professor of Economics at University of New South Wales, and held visiting positionsat University of Oxford in 1999, University of British Columbia and Regent College Vancouver in 2003, and PrincetonTheological Seminary and University in 2006/7. His PhD in Economics and Master of Economics/Econometrics with Honours were completed at the University of Sydney, and Bachelor of Divinity through Melbourne College ofDivinity. This lecture is presented by the Social Policy Action Research Centre at the Crawford School of Public Policy at The Australian National University. For more information: https://crawford.anu.edu.au/events/1420/markets-social-services-and-religion-what-future-service-delivery-through-church
