This is the introductory lecture for History 9A (UCLA); the lecture discusses course requirements and furnishes an overview of the entire course. General discussion with some questions in the interpretation of Indian history. Some general comments on the long span of Indian history, what we mean we speak of 'India', the sources for the study of Indian history, the problems with translation--rendering one culture into the terms familiar to us from another culture, and so on.
