Ambassador Thomas R. Pickering, former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, presented a public talk on October 3, 2011, titled, "Iran's Nuclear Program: Should Diplomacy Be Given a Chance?" The discussion was sponsored by the Woodrow Wilson School of Public & International Affairs and the Program on Science and Global Security. Pickering served as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations from 1989 to 1992. During his tenure at the U.N. he played a key role in the U.N. Security Council's response to Iraq's invasion of Kuwait. He has also served as U.S. ambassador to the Russian Federation, India, Israel, El Salvador, Nigeria, and Jordan. Pickering also holds the rank of career ambassador, the highest rank in the U.S. Foreign Service.
